The recent cold open of “Saturday Night Live” took a humorous jab at Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s boldness amidst the escalating tensions with Iran, as well as Kristi Noem’s departure from the Department of Homeland Security following a series of mishaps.

Colin Jost portrayed a pumped-up Hegseth during a press conference addressing the U.S.’s increased military involvement in Iran. Dressed in his trademark blue suit and American-flag pocket square, Jost’s Hegseth exuded confidence as he boasted about the success of the mission, likening the situation to a wild ride. He dismissed the notion of war, calling it a “situation-ship” and described the military tactics in a cheeky manner.

The press conference turned comical as Jost’s Hegseth engaged in banter with the faux reporters, showcasing his bravado and wit. He playfully taunted the media, declaring himself as “white Hamilton” and making amusing references to pop culture and current events. Sarah Sherman made a cameo as a Reuters reporter, adding to the comedic exchange.

The skit also poked fun at Kristi Noem, who was depicted as being “reassigned under the bus” by Hegseth. Noem, played by Padilla, humorously addressed her departure from the department and hinted at her future endeavors. Her character’s vanity and rumored scandals were also satirized in a lighthearted manner.

As the episode progressed, the focus shifted to the upcoming host, Ryan Gosling, and the musical guest, Gorillaz. Gosling’s appearance on the show was tied to the promotion of his latest film, “Project Hail Mary,” set to release later in March. The episode marked Gosling’s fourth time hosting “SNL,” with Gorillaz making their debut performance on the show.

Overall, the skit provided a comedic take on current political and entertainment news, showcasing the cast’s comedic talents and ability to satirize real-world events with a light-hearted approach. The blend of humor, wit, and pop culture references made for an entertaining start to the episode, setting the stage for an enjoyable evening of comedy.
