Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” emerged victorious at the 73rd annual Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards, which took place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on Sunday.
The film’s sound teams were honored with awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Dialogue / ADR and Outstanding Achievement in Music Editing – Feature Motion Picture.
These awards celebrate excellence in sound editing, sound design, music editing, and foley artistry across film, television, and gaming.
In the feature film category, “Frankenstein” won for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Feature Effects / Foley, while in the animated feature category, “Zootopia 2” took home the top prize for sound editing.
With both “Sinners” and “Sirat” nominated for sound at the Oscars, the competition for the prestigious award is heating up. The Cinema Audio Society honored “F1” and “KPop Demon Hunters” for sound mixing, with “F1” also winning at the Bafta ceremony.
On the television front, “Adolescence,” “Alien: Earth,” and “Murderbot” were recognized for their exceptional sound editing work.
In addition to the competitive awards, two honorary awards were presented at the event. Kathleen Kennedy received the Filmmaker Award, while supervising sound editor Mark Mangini was honored with the Career Achievement Award.
During her acceptance speech, Kennedy emphasized the importance of sound in storytelling, stating that it helps to ground the narrative and connect audiences with the characters on an emotional level. She also shared insights about her upcoming project, “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” highlighting the significance of non-verbal communication in character development.
Comedian Patton Oswalt hosted the event, marking his fourth time as the Golden Reel Awards host. MPSE president David Barber presided over the ceremony, bringing together the sound community to celebrate their achievements.
