Community is a vital aspect of the art world, connecting artists, galleries, and art enthusiasts. Recent developments in the industry have sparked discussions and excitement, from new gallery representation to innovative art projects.

Alma Allen, a sculptor based in Mexico, has recently joined the prestigious roster of Perrotin, a French gallery with locations in Paris and New York. Allen’s decision to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale under the Trump administration’s controversial selection process raised eyebrows. While some critics question the political implications of his work, others praise his craftsmanship and artistic vision. Allen’s move to Perrotin marks a significant milestone in his career, showcasing his talent on an international stage.

In Brooklyn, the art scene is buzzing with the announcement of Keisha Scarville as the recipient of the 2026 UOVO Prize. This prestigious award celebrates emerging Brooklyn-based artists and comes with a $25,000 cash grant and two commissions. Scarville’s upcoming project, titled “Where Salt Meets Black Water,” will be unveiled at the Brooklyn Museum’s Iris Cantor Plaza in May, showcasing her unique artistic voice and creativity.

In other news, the Portland Museum of Art has appointed Andrew Eschelbacher as its new deputy director and head of Art and Exhibitions. Laura Phipps, former associate curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, has taken on the role of director at the Gochman Family Collection. These appointments reflect the dynamic nature of the art world, with talented individuals moving into leadership positions and shaping the future of cultural institutions.

Meanwhile, Marina Abramović, known for her groundbreaking performance art, is venturing into new territory with an installation at the Balloon Museum in New York City. This project, described as her “first foray into inflatable materials,” will feature an immersive environment filled with inflatable blades of grass. Abramović’s exploration of childhood objects and philosophical themes adds a playful element to her body of work, inviting viewers to experience art in a whimsical and thought-provoking way.
