ENHYPEN’s upcoming performance at the 2026 안녕, MELBOURNE Music Festival in Melbourne, Australia has sparked controversy within the fandom. Reports of plans to organize a “black ocean” protest during the group’s stage have surfaced online, leading to heated debates among fans.

The concept of a “black ocean” in K-pop culture involves fans turning off their lightsticks and refraining from cheering during a performance, creating a silent and dark atmosphere as a form of protest or disapproval towards the artist on stage. This act is considered one of the most visible forms of protest during concerts and festival performances.

The controversy began following the announcement on March 10 by ENHYPEN’s agency, Belift Lab, confirming Heeseung’s departure from the group. The decision was made after discussions about the group’s future direction and Heeseung’s desire to pursue a different musical path independently. Despite expressing interest in solo activities, Heeseung will remain under the label while focusing on his individual career.

In response to the news, fans known as ENGENEs launched various campaigns urging the agency to reconsider the decision. However, plans for a black ocean protest at the Melbourne festival received backlash from many fans who believed it would be unfair to the remaining six members of ENHYPEN. Concerns were raised about the potential negative impact on the group during a public performance.

Online discussions highlighted the importance of supporting the group as a whole, with fans emphasizing the significance of the event for member Jake, who was raised in Australia and had expressed his desire to perform in his home country. Fans urged for respect towards the other members and emphasized the hurtful nature of a black ocean protest.

Following the controversy, ENHYPEN resumed their schedules as a six-member group, with Jungwon, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki continuing their activities. Belift Lab clarified that focusing on solo activities was the best path for both Heeseung and the group. The remaining members expressed their respect for Heeseung’s decision and thanked fans for their support.

As the group prepared for their performance at the Melbourne music festival, fans hoped for a successful and harmonious event, emphasizing the importance of unity and support for all members. The controversy surrounding the black ocean protest served as a reminder of the complexities within fan communities and the impact of actions on artists and their careers.
