Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with the US following President Trump’s suggestion of a “friendly takeover” of the Communist island.
“These talks are focused on resolving bilateral differences through dialogue between our two nations,” Diaz-Canel stated. “International factors have facilitated these exchanges.”
He emphasized that the discussions are being carried out “on the basis of equality and respect for both countries’ political systems, sovereignty, and self-determination of our governments.”
Following his raid on Caracas on January 3, which led to the ousting of socialist ally Nicholas Maduro, Trump ceased Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba and has threatened tariffs on any country supplying oil to the island.
