Washington:

A groundbreaking moment in the trade relations between the United States and India occurred as the first shipment of American Turkey products departed for India on Tuesday. This significant event follows India’s decision to lower tariffs on US turkey products, a move that was agreed upon over a year ago.

US Senator from Virginia, Mark Warner, who also serves as the co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, hailed this shipment as a historic milestone in international trade. He emphasized the importance of expanding the global reach of American turkey products and creating new opportunities for US turkey producers.

Senator Warner stated, “This shipment represents a tremendous opportunity for Virginia’s poultry producers and signifies a major advancement in US-India trade relations. As co-chair of the Senate India Caucus, I am eager to witness the continued collaboration between our two nations and the growth of opportunities for Virginia’s poultry producers.”

The successful shipment is the result of a trade agreement and tariff reduction that was achieved through the joint efforts of both countries. Last year, prior to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, Senator Warner and his colleagues urged Ambassador Katherine Tai to enhance market access for US turkey and poultry products, which had faced significant barriers in the Indian market due to high tariffs.

Leslee Oden, CEO of the National Turkey Federation, highlighted the commitment of US turkey producers to providing safe and high-quality protein options globally. He expressed excitement about Indian consumers experiencing the exceptional quality of American turkey through this shipment.

John King, president of Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative, expressed enthusiasm about the new market opportunity, which will benefit nearly 200 independent turkey grower owners. Similarly, Hobey Bauhan, president of the Virginia Poultry Federation, expressed optimism about the export potential to India, emphasizing the quality of lean protein that Virginia turkey farmers are proud to offer.

Under the trade agreement announced in September 2023, India eliminated and reduced retaliatory tariffs on US turkey products, paving the way for increased access to the country’s rapidly expanding protein market.
