One Battle After Another won the best picture award at the 98th Oscars ceremony on Sunday night.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson also secured wins for best director and best adapted screenplay for the film. Cassandra Kulukundis, the casting director of One Battle After Another, received the Academy’s inaugural award for achievement in casting.
Other notable winners included Ryan Coogler for best original screenplay for Sinners, Michael B. Jordan for best actor for his role in Sinners, and Jessie Buckley for best actress for her portrayal of Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet.
The ceremony saw a tie in the live action short films category between The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva. This marked the first tie in this category since 2013.
Some acceptance speeches touched on political and social issues beyond the realm of Hollywood. Javier Bardem advocated for peace and a free Palestine, while David Borenstein, co-director of Mr. Nobody Against Putin, highlighted the importance of speaking out against injustices.
