A University of Alabama student has gone missing during a spring break trip to Spain, as reported by his family.
James Paul Gracey, 20, was last seen at the famous Shoko club in Barcelona on Tuesday night. He was visiting friends who were studying abroad in the city, according to a Facebook post by his mother, Therese Gracey.
Therese Gracey mentioned that her son, known as Jimmy, was last spotted inside the club around 3 a.m. by a friend who left the venue, while Jimmy chose to remain.
Therese Gracey stated that her son did not return to his accommodation.
âThe police have his phone, but he didnât make it back to the Airbnb. Has anyone seen him?â Therese Gracey appealed in the âStudents in Barcelona 2026â Facebook group.
Originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, Gracey is an honors accounting junior at the University of Alabama, based on his LinkedIn profile.
The university confirmed his status as a student in Tuscaloosa, although he was on a personal trip during his disappearance, as reported by ABC 33/40.
He was last seen wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.
In October, Gracey announced he had been elected chaplain of the Alpha Phi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity.
His fellow students reported seeing Gracey and urged his family to contact local politicians and embassy officials to boost efforts in finding him.
Shoko was ranked the seventh best club in the world and the top nightclub in Barcelona for 2025 by Nightlife International.
The club, situated on the Barcelona seafront, is known for its award-winning cuisine and is described as offering exclusive nightlife experiences in the city.
