The Chosen, a television series that explores the life of Jesus Christ, has gained popularity, despite making some adaptations to the original biblical narratives.

Joey Vahedi, who portrays the apostle Thomas on this Prime Video series, shared insights with Us Weekly about how the show humanizes its characters. “The writers excel in highlighting the human side of each character as opposed to their modern-day portrayals,” Vahedi explained. “Typically, people might associate these figures with the stained glass images they recall from childhood.”

Vahedi elaborated, “When you delve into their lives, Peter was a fisherman with his own flaws. Thomas was a businessman aiming for success. Matthew is depicted as being on the spectrum. These very human stories are why people connect with the show.”

First airing in 2017, the historical drama presents the life of Jesus through those who encountered him, such as apostles, disciples, Jewish religious leaders, Roman officials, and common folk.

Alongside Vahedi, 35, The Chosen features Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, with Shahar Isaac, Elizabeth Tabish, Paras Patel, Noah James, George H. Xanthis, and more in the cast.

Vahedi also discussed his unwavering faith since the show’s inception with Us Weekly.

“Though my faith hasn’t necessarily changed, it’s remarkable if the show influences others positively. For those who are already spiritual and find their faith reinforced, or those who view it from a new perspective, it’s vital today,” he shared. “The underlying message is to love and care for each other. Even among viewers who aren’t religious — about a third of our audience, I believe — the show resonates in various ways. If it benefits viewers, then it’s successful.”

Reflecting on the show’s impact, Vahedi remarked, “It’s unusual for a series to have such a strong influence on both believers and non-believers. I suggest viewing it as a historical piece. As one of our producers once said, ‘Viewers enjoy Game of Thrones despite not believing in dragons.’ It’s similar here — a story about individuals striving for change amidst oppression.”

Vahedi also noted that season 6 posed new challenges during filming.

“The storyline becomes more fragmented, causing uncertainty and anxiety among the disciples,” he hinted.

Season 6 of The Chosen is set to debut on November 15 in the U.S. and internationally. After the initial three episodes, the series will continue with weekly releases, culminating in a standalone theatrical finale planned for spring 2027.

“Cinematically, it will be one of our most ambitious projects. As we near the end, it’s bittersweet. This experience has been a tremendous blessing,” Vahedi shared with Us. “While it’s hard to see it conclude, it allows us to cherish the journey we’ve had.”

The Chosen is available for streaming on Prime Video.
