A man with five prior burglary convictions is facing charges for breaking into a bar in Logan Square, just three weeks after an alleged convenience store burglary and subsequent failure to appear in court. His arrest came after the bar manager, who was working late to train new staff, alerted authorities.

Ron Humphrey, 32, was initially arrested on April 2. Prosecutors allege he used a crowbar to break into the 7-Eleven located at 200 South Racine Avenue around 3 a.m., stealing a cash register with approximately $88. Although the store operates 24/7, its doors are locked at night.

He reportedly returned for a second register but fled upon spotting a hidden employee who had activated a holdup alarm. Police found Humphrey hiding under a car in a nearby parking lot.

After his arrest, prosecutors did not pursue his detention, and he was released. However, he missed his April 9 court date, leading to a warrant for his arrest, as per records.

While the warrant was still active, Humphrey allegedly committed another burglary. Around 3:30 a.m. on April 23, he is accused of using a crowbar to break into Federales Tacos & Tequila at 2471 North Milwaukee Avenue and attempting to access an office, according to prosecutors. The manager was already in the office and on a call with 911.

A Chicago Police Department report states the manager had remained late to train staff when he heard a motion alarm, secured himself in the office, and observed Humphrey entering, wearing a hoodie and surgical mask, and carrying a crowbar.

Humphrey fled on a bicycle but was apprehended by police using surveillance cameras.

He now faces burglary charges in the Federales incident. Prosecutors requested Judge Rivanda Doss Beal detain him on this charge. She declined, opting for electronic monitoring, but detained him for breaching pretrial release terms in the 7-Eleven case. He remains in custody for this violation.

Court records indicate Humphrey’s past includes four burglary convictions in 2014, another in 2019, and a felony theft conviction in 2017.
