On April 12, through a series of posts on Threads, Ruby Rose accused Katy Perry of sexually assaulting her in a Melbourne nightclub nearly two decades ago.
Rose stated, “Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a s— what she thinks.” She alleged the incident took place when she was in her early 20s, and although it happened long ago, it took her nearly two decades to speak out publicly.
Describing the encounter, Rose recounted, “She saw me ‘resting’ on my best friend’s lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting v—– on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her.” She mentioned altering the story in the past to sound like a humorous account as she was unsure how to address it. According to her, Perry later assisted her in obtaining a US visa, which led her to keep the incident a secret, though she had previously hinted at Perry’s character, resulting in backlash.
Rose further remarked, “She is more than welcome to sue me (she won’t, because it happened, I have photos and it was literally in public and witnessed by multiple people). Plus, there is so much more that happened in the years leading up to her silly song she won’t want me discussing… The psychological manipulation was strong with that one.”
Although Rose did not file a report at the time, she confirmed that she lodged a complaint hours after making the allegations public online.
She updated her followers, writing, “This means I am no longer able to comment, repost, or talk publicly about any of those cases, or the individuals involved. It’s going to look like I am ignoring everything from supportive messages, to other people’s experiences, but I’m not. This is a standard request from the police and in many ways, quite the relief. I can start the healing process now. And temporarily move forward. I love you all so much.”
A representative for Perry responded, labeling the claims as “categorically false” and “dangerous, reckless lies.”
Meanwhile, detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse Investigation Team have initiated an investigation into a “historical sexual assault that occurred in Melbourne in 2010.”
Acting Sergeant Paul Hogan of Victoria Police stated, “Police have been told the incident occurred at a licensed premises in Melbourne’s Central Business District.”
In addition, the former manager of the Melbourne nightclub informed The Herald Sun (via Rolling Stone Australia) that he was unaware of any such incident at the time, noting that both Rose and Perry were “drunk” but not to an extreme extent.
