After missing out on joining the group, Electra’s disappointment was quickly alleviated by a phone call that would ultimately alter her career path.
She recounted to OWN how Prince reached out to her, saying, “I think you should be your own artist and not back up anyone else. I’m going to write you a song, and if you like it, you can record it.”
Electra explained that the song was titled Carmen on Top, which initially confused her as her name was Tara. She loved the song, but Prince insisted, “You’re not a Tara. You’re not Tara. You’re Carmen.”
Electra credited Prince with being instrumental in shaping her early career, noting that he “controlled everything,” from her style and music to her hairstyles.
In a separate interview with E! News, she praised Prince’s genius in these areas.
In January 2024, the Go Go Dancer singer officially filed to change her name from “Tara Leigh Patrick” to “Carmen Electra,” a request that was approved by a Los Angeles Superior Court the following month.
In a 2014 interview with The Yo Show, she shared that while she initially thought the name sounded like a superhero, it eventually grew on her, and she embraced it.
