Before examining how Donald Trump’s endorsement of Ken Paxton in the Republican Texas Senate primary runoff could benefit Democrats, there are two key points to consider.
Senate Republicans did not want Trump to endorse Paxton because they believe the Texas Attorney General might jeopardize the seat. For months, Senate Republicans have been urging Trump to back Sen. John Cornyn instead, as Cornyn is more popular with Texas moderate voters and would pose a tougher challenge for Democratic nominee James Talarico.
Trump likely chose to endorse Paxton now because internal polls indicate Paxton is leading in the runoff. Trump tends to endorse candidates who appear poised to win, allowing him to later boast about his successful endorsements. This pattern is evident once again in Texas.
Trump’s endorsement of Paxton is extensive, so we will focus on a portion of it:

Trump’s endorsement seems unusual, almost as if he is campaigning for the Texas Senate seat himself. Additionally, the president attempted to incite fear among Texans to encourage them to vote for Paxton instead of Talarico in November.
