According to an insider, traditionalists are most frustrated by Meghan’s tendency to publicly criticize the monarchy while capitalizing on her connection to it in private.
“Every new controversy related to titles, branding, or royal-like appearances only strengthens the critics’ belief that Meghan views the monarchy more as a marketable brand than a family or public institution,” the insider explained.
Though Meghan became a princess upon marrying Harry in 2018, she has never used the title “Princess Meghan” and is officially known as the Duchess of Sussex.
In accordance with British royal traditions, the title “Princess” is typically reserved for those born into the royal family.
Gill criticized Meghan’s efforts to make the surname “Sussex” more popular.
“It’s not Meghan Markle – it’s Meghan Sussex,” Gill remarked. She added: “Her remark to Mindy Kaling on her Netflix show, where she insisted her surname was ‘Sussex’ and encouraged everyone to call her Meghan Sussex, never really caught on.”
Gill further accused Meghan and Harry of trying to retain royal privileges while selectively engaging in public service.
“I’ve always said they act like gig economy Royals, wanting to work part-time while returning to California to enjoy the benefits of their royal titles. That’s not what being a royal is about,” she argued.
“Royalty is about service, dignity, respect for your nation, and diplomacy,” Gill emphasized.
An additional source indicated that Meghan’s recent public appearances and business ventures have contributed to the perception that she seeks royal legitimacy despite stepping away from official duties.
The insider noted: “Critics strongly feel that Meghan never intended to abandon royal prestige entirely. She wanted freedom from palace constraints while retaining the status, influence, and financial benefits of the monarchy. This is why her branding efforts and unofficial tours continually spark accusations of her attempting to act as a celebrity version of royalty.”
De Giorgio criticized Meghan’s changing public image, saying: “In Australia, she said, ‘Just call me Meg.’
“She wants to be Meghan, the Duchess. She wants to be Meghan, Sussex in other places. But in Australia, ‘Just call me Meg, please.’ It’s like she’s trying to be seen as a relatable, everyday woman.
“It’s just crazy.”
