In a Democratic runoff marked by significant external funding and a generational clash, Texas Rep. Christian Menefee emerged victorious over longtime Rep. Al Green.

This outcome on Tuesday likely marks the conclusion of Green’s extensive political career. Green, a 78-year-old advocate for civil rights, sought a 12th term in Washington, D.C. He entered the race for the newly delineated 18th District in the Houston area after his previous district was reconfigured through redistricting.

Menefee, a 38-year-old attorney from Harris County and a fellow Congressional Black Caucus member, joined Congress earlier this year. He secured a win in a special election in January to fill the remaining term of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner. Menefee is anticipated to secure an easy victory in November in the predominantly Democratic Houston district.

The race also highlighted the growing influence of the cryptocurrency lobby. A super PAC supporting cryptocurrency invested $4 million into Menefee’s campaign, transforming the contest between incumbents into the priciest House runoff in Texas for this election cycle.

Ultimately, Green, known for his vocal criticism of President Donald Trump, was unable to overcome the financial disadvantage despite his established name recognition.
