Today marks the 251st anniversary of the United States Army, the oldest and most renowned branch of our military forces. For over 250 years, the bravery and dedication of our soldiers have safeguarded our homeland, ensuring our nation’s strength, sovereignty, and freedom. On this special occasion, we unite in gratitude and respect for these heroes and renew our unwavering support for the courageous men and women who defend our country.
The United States Army was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress established a unified Continental Army led by General George Washington. From the nation’s inception, enduring the harsh winter at Valley Forge, achieving victories at Saratoga, and securing freedom at Yorktown, the Army has played a pivotal role in our national history. Over its 251-year history, the Army has consistently risen to meet every challenge, preserving the Union during the civil war, liberating Cuba in the Spanish-American War, and securing triumphs in both World Wars. Our soldiers have stood resilient in Korea’s icy hills, Vietnam’s dense jungles, and during operations in Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Today, the Army remains crucial in maintaining America’s peace, prosperity, and security.
As the Army has always fought for us, it is now our turn to support them. My Administration has proposed significant investments to revitalize our Army and provide our soldiers with the necessary resources. Building on substantial investments already made through the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, we are enhancing Army infrastructure, delivering advanced weapons systems, boosting joint force capabilities, expanding the defense industrial base, and strengthening our strategic deterrence with a steadfast America First approach.
Our soldiers and their families deserve unwavering support from a grateful nation. Last Christmas, I was honored to provide a Warrior Dividend to over 1.5 million service members—a $1,776 tax-free bonus celebrating the year of our nation’s founding and recognizing the daily sacrifices and bravery of these Americans. Under my leadership, we have removed divisive ideologies from the ranks, restored the warrior ethos, and rebuilt the Army on its foundational values: merit, grit, and strength. Our soldiers today are united by a commitment to our nation’s founding principles, shared history, and unwavering dedication to duty. The results are evident: Army recruitment has reached historic levels, achieving its 2026 goals four months early.
As we commemorate 250 years of American Independence, we welcome a new era for the United States Army. We pledge to always support our remarkable service members, their families, and their supporters. Above all, we honor all soldiers who have answered the call to serve and reaffirm the timeless pledge that has guided generations: This We’ll Defend.
