A teacher from Washington state has been accused of engaging in sexual activities with her two teenage adopted sons. The allegations came to light after her estranged husband submitted a series of disturbing text messages between her and one of the boys to the authorities.
Amber Swain, 35, a resident of Newport, faces charges of incest following accusations that she had sexual relationships with her 17- and 18-year-old adopted sons. Court documents reveal these claims were brought forward by her ex.
According to documents obtained by the Daily Mail, one of Swain’s adopted sons had expressed in a text message his desire to sleep in her bed “again, just once.”
Swain responded, “No,” as per a probable cause affidavit. “I love you so much.” She further added, “Nothing like that is ever going to happen. You will find someone who you love being with like that and care about.”
Swain, a mother of six and a former executive director of the nonprofit Spokane Angels, is alleged to have initiated a sexual relationship with one of the boys in December when he was 17, as reported by the outlet.
Authorities noted that Swain had adopted one of the boys after first meeting him as a struggling third-grader in her classroom in 2017.
In interviews with police, one of the adopted sons claimed to have had sexual relations with Swain “many times,” including just two days prior to the police interviews, according to the court documents.
The teen alleged that during their initial encounter, Swain questioned, “Should we be doing this?” to which he replied, “Yes.”
The son who texted Swain about wanting it “to happen again” grew suspicious of her involvement with his brother after discovering her underwear in his sibling’s room and finding them together in a locked room.
He recounted falling asleep in Swain’s bed and waking to find her beside him, as reported by the outlet.
According to court documents, the boy told police that it was “normal” for them, referencing that they had “cuddled since he was young.”
When pressed for details, he commented, “Things got handsy, that’s all I’m going to say,” describing putting his hand inside Swain’s clothing and that they “changed positions several times.”
He noted that after two minutes, Swain moved his hand away, stating they could not continue, and they stopped.
Initially, Swain denied any sexual interaction with her adopted son when questioned about the incident.
She later admitted that the boy had touched her leg while she was asleep, and she had frozen and moved it away twice.
Eventually, she reportedly told officers that she did not know why she “leaned in,” adding that she was “like half asleep or something” before pushing his hand away.
While Swain initially denied a sexual relationship with the other boy, she later admitted to having sex with him starting in February of this year, as noted in the affidavit.
Detectives informed her that the victim claimed their sexual relationship began in December when he was 17.
Swain was arrested on June 2 on suspicion of first- and second-degree incest after her estranged husband provided the text messages to Washington’s Department of Children, Youth and Families.
Following her arrest, Swain was placed on administrative leave from Pend Oreille River School, the Newport School District’s alternative high school.
Authorities noted that Swain had previously served as an executive director for Spokane Angels, where she had built a public profile advocating for foster children.
Swain entered a plea of not guilty at her arraignment on June 8 and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
Her trial is scheduled to begin on October 6.
