Netflix is working on a live-action series inspired by the “Persona” video game franchise, as reported by Variety from insider information.
Christopher Monfette is set to write the series adaptation, taking on the roles of executive producer and showrunner. Executive production responsibilities will also be handled by Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood from 21 Laps, alongside Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen. Additionally, Toru Nakahara from SEGA will serve as an executive producer. 21 Laps maintains an overarching TV agreement with Netflix.
Netflix has chosen not to comment on the development.
The “Persona” franchise is a highly acclaimed RPG series. Its games generally follow Japanese high school students who balance everyday activities and friendships with confronting supernatural challenges.
Created by P-Studios, a branch of Atlus, and published by Sega, the “Persona” series includes six main titles, with a seventh, “Persona 6,” officially announced for development in June 2026. The franchise also features 15 spin-off games. Initially, “Persona” started as a spin-off of the “Shin Megami Tensei” series, debuting with “Revelations: Persona” in 1996. The latest release was “Persona 5: The Phantom X” in 2025, and “Persona 4 Revival” is scheduled for February 2027.
Should the project proceed, it will not be Netflix’s first foray into video game adaptations. The platform has previously developed the live-action series “The Witcher” and animated series such as “Arcane,” “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” and “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.”
Monfette’s previous writing credits include television series like “12 Monkeys” on Syfy, “Star Trek: Picard” on Paramount+, and “9-1-1” for Fox & ABC. He is also contributing as a writer and co-executive producer for the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series “VisionQuest.”
On the television front, 21 Laps is renowned for producing the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which recently wrapped up after five successful seasons. The show significantly bolstered Netflix’s reputation for original content by demonstrating that streaming series could rival traditional TV in popularity. 21 Laps has also produced acclaimed series like “The Perfect Couple” and “Last Man Standing,” in addition to films such as “Backrooms” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the latter co-written and directed by Levy.
Story Kitchen, founded in 2022 by “Sonic the Hedgehog” producer Johnson and former agency partner Goldberg, alongside veteran production executive Stevenson and creative executive Elena Sandoval, focuses on adapting video games and unconventional IP into TV and film. Their current projects include live-action adaptations of “Tomb Raider” and “Life Is Strange,” both set up at Amazon Prime Video.
Monfette is represented by Industry Entertainment. 21 Laps is represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham, while Story Kitchen is represented by WME and Pryor Cashman Sherman & Flynn.
