On Monday, President Donald Trump remarked that he was unfamiliar with the concept of a red card prior to the U.S.-Bosnia match last Wednesday.
However, in 2018, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had already introduced him to soccer’s disciplinary measures during a meeting in the Oval Office. This meeting occurred after the United States was awarded the co-hosting rights for the 2026 World Cup.
In that session, which followed the United Bid’s success, Infantino provided an explanation of the sport’s use of yellow and red cards, even bringing out examples from a case.
“In soccer, referees use cards: yellow cards and red cards,” Infantino explained to Trump. “A yellow card serves as a warning, while a red card is used to eject someone. Like this!”
The demonstration appeared to amuse Trump.
“I like that,” he commented as he picked up the red card and held it aloft. “Thank you.”
Infantino humorously suggested that the cards could find uses outside the soccer field.
“That could be used for, I don’t know, the next media session,” he quipped.
