Police have apprehended a man accused of inappropriate conduct on a CTA bus. A woman reported that he touched her, but despite this, a Cook County judge has decided not to detain the man or require him to wear an ankle monitor.

In June, Chicago police issued a community alert with a CTA surveillance image, requesting the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in an incident on a bus in the 1200 block of West Harrison Street at around 4:40 p.m. on June 3. According to police, the suspect pretended to be asleep before touching a 31-year-old woman’s leg and engaging in a lewd act.

A detailed report from the Chicago Police Department indicated that after touching the woman, the suspect exited the bus, looked back at her, and made a lewd gesture.

Prosecutors have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Cesar Hernandez-Aleman. The CPD arrest report states that the victim identified him in a photo lineup, and police utilized electronic identification methods as well. Hernandez-Aleman faces charges of aggravated battery of a transit passenger and public indecency.

Prosecutors requested that Hernandez-Aleman be detained before trial, but Judge Robert Kuzas opted not to keep him in custody or place him under electronic monitoring. Hernandez-Aleman’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 21.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets.
