A tragic incident claimed at least one life and injured several others when a vehicle plowed into a crowd at a Pride event in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday.
Berlin police have identified a suspect linked to “Islamist circles” and familiar to law enforcement. A manhunt is underway.
The driver of a white vehicle struck multiple individuals before 10:00 p.m. local time, resulting in at least 17 injuries, several of which are life-threatening.
The incident unfolded in Tiergarten Park, one of Berlin’s largest parks, amid an LGBTQ+ celebration.
Kai Wegner, Berlin’s governing mayor, condemned the event as “an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society.”
“Berlin is the city of freedom – and our freedom has been horribly attacked today,” Wegner expressed on social media. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and friends… And I have confidence in the police and security authorities, who will investigate with the utmost urgency.”
Earlier that day, thousands had marched through Berlin advocating for LGBTQ+ rights during the annual Christopher Street Day Parade, one of Europe’s largest pride events, which was subsequently canceled following the attack.
