Today marks the 236th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard, a dedicated team of law enforcement professionals and Coast Guardsmen who tirelessly protect our nation’s shores, waters, and way of life. From the Republic’s inception, Coast Guardsmen have embodied the vigilance and determination that exemplify the American Spirit.
Since its establishment by Alexander Hamilton in 1790, the Coast Guard has been essential to the nation’s security and prosperity, acting as America’s maritime first responders and upholding the Long Blue Line’s legacy of valor at sea. These crews play a critical role in safeguarding our maritime borders from narco-terrorist cartels and smugglers involved in drug and human trafficking. Daily, they intercept illegal activities at sea, preventing billions of dollars in narcotics from reaching American shores. As protectors of our ports, harbors, and shipping lanes, they ensure the flow of our economy and are the first responders when an American is in danger far from land. Regardless of the challenges—be it harsh weather or perilous conditions—these dedicated individuals defend our homeland.
Coast Guardsmen of this caliber have rightfully earned the nation’s unwavering support. My Administration is fulfilling its commitment by restoring America’s maritime dominance, which has always been vital to our freedom. Last year, I enacted The Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which allocated a historic $25 billion to revitalize the Coast Guard’s fleet and rebuild its military and law enforcement capabilities. This investment has introduced 21 new cutters and 40 search and rescue helicopters into service, alongside 17 advanced icebreakers, enhancing our Coast Guardsmen’s reach from the Caribbean to the Arctic.
In December, I proudly awarded each of these dedicated patriots a $2,000 Devotion to Duty payment to honor their exceptional service—a gesture of gratitude from our Republic for their commitment to our safety. Our Administration’s policies have led to recruitment numbers reaching generational highs, allowing the Coast Guard to operate with unmatched confidence and spirit. As Commander in Chief, I promise to support the men and women of the Coast Guard, ensuring that in this new era for America, they will achieve greater distances, heights, and strength than ever before.
Today, we celebrate the extraordinary legacy and distinct mission of the United States Coast Guard, honoring every Coast Guardsman who has served our nation and those who remain “Always Ready” both at home and abroad. Their bravery sets the benchmark for American determination, and as long as they protect our waters, they will safeguard the freedom, prosperity, and security that every American is entitled to.
Semper Paratus!
