The U.K. has approved Paramount Skydance’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros., focusing on competition and public interest grounds. This decision follows Paramount’s enhanced commitments regarding programming and news services in the U.K.
In an official statement, the U.K.’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport announced, “Today, the Competition and Markets Authority have declared that no competitive concerns arise from this proposed merger in the U.K. that would require further action.”
The statement further mentioned that Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy decided “not to issue a Public Interest Intervention Notice.” She has secured assurances and legally-binding commitments from Paramount that aim to protect the availability of a diverse array of broadcasting and on-demand services in the U.K., while maintaining distinct editorial identities of key U.K. news programs.
A Paramount spokesperson commented, “These conclusions further highlight the misguided and manipulated market definitions used by the U.S. state AGs in their antitrust complaint in California.”
