According to Hamja, the majority of individuals he captured in photographs were en route to destinations such as East Hampton, Provincetown, Martha’s Vineyard, and Upstate New York. Reflecting on his experiences, Hamja notes, “The best part was trying to find the people.”
An obstacle he faced was deciphering who was arriving and who was departing amidst the bustling travel scene. Hamja explains that he sought out people dressed for train, helicopter, and ferry rides and quickly identified those embarking on weekend getaways.
“Some people, you can tell they’re like, ‘I want to get out of the city this weekend,’” he remarks.
Regarding travel attire, people displayed a variety of styles that highlighted the diversity of New York fashion. Some travelers opted for all-white outfits, taking advantage of the time before Labor Day to wear their radiant ensembles.
Others chose flowy summer dresses and button-downs that could serve as beach cover-ups. Many prioritized comfort, while some appeared ready to transition from the train directly to a winery or summer barbecue. Several individuals came straight from work, with no opportunity to change out of their office attire.
