Reforming election laws is crucial to bolstering democracy in the United States. With the Supreme Court’s conservative majority expected to overturn any congressional measures aimed at banning Citizens United, legislative efforts to limit special-interest money in elections appear unlikely.
This political situation, however, does not prevent the Democratic Party from addressing the influence of super PAC money in its primary elections.

The latest example of super PACs attempting to influence elections is the significant financial push by AIPAC to challenge Abdul El-Sayed, though it is not an isolated incident.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has sent a letter to House Minority Leader Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Schumer, and DNC Chair Ken Martin, urging the party to prohibit super PAC donations.
Sanders wrote:
The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, recently spent over $30 million in the Michigan Democratic primary to try to defeat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed.
Reports indicate that AIPAC plans to spend tens of millions more to support Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
AIPAC is not alone in this; corporate super PACs — including those from crypto, AI, and online betting sectors — have already spent a record $517 million this election cycle, surpassing the previous record set in 2024.

The enormous influx of money into Democratic primaries from billionaire-funded super PACs is not only obscene but also reflects their lack of interest in Democrats winning.
It’s absurd that they spend tens of millions to influence who becomes the Democratic nominee, only to support the Republican candidate in the general election if they fail.
This is not democracy. This is not what Democratic voters want.

As a nation, we must pass a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and legislate for public funding of elections.
However, immediate action is possible.
The Democratic Party currently has the power to stop super PACs from participating in its primaries. This action can and should be taken.
I urge you to act now and ensure the Democratic Party no longer supports this corrupt system.
While the party includes a range of ideologies, I hope we can all agree that Republican special interests should not influence the outcomes of Democratic primaries.
The time to act is now.
Sen. Sanders is correct. Democratic primary voters are demonstrating nationwide that they do not want general election candidates influenced by super PAC money.
Democratic primaries should be determined by Democratic voters, free from special interest influence. The Democratic Party has the opportunity to address this issue today and remove special interest money from the primaries.
