The enigmatic AI model Ox Alpha has sparked widespread speculation online about its creator’s identity.
Released for free on OpenRouter on Thursday, Ox Alpha is described as “a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload.” Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, praised the model on X as “very impressive.”
The question remains: who is behind Ox Alpha? According to the OpenRouter listing, it is a “stealth model” developed and operated by an anonymous third-party provider during this preview phase.
Speculation has largely centered around China. AI analyst Andrew Curran noted on Friday that initial theories pointed to the GLM models from Chinese firm Z.ai, but doubts have since emerged.
An article on Wccftech initially suggested the GLM connection, but later updates speculated Ox Alpha might be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI. On Reddit, opinions are divided; one post claims Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese,” while another expresses “high confidence” in its Chinese origins.
