Garmin has filed a patent for an algorithm designed to address challenges in achieving accurate non-invasive measurements. The algorithm aims to mitigate issues such as inaccurate readings caused by a watch being worn too tightly, which can compress blood vessels and distort results.

Should this technology become available this year, it is anticipated to be featured in the Garmin Fenix 9, which is expected to launch in the coming months.

Apple’s next big innovation

While Garmin is making strides in health tracking technology, there are rumors that Apple has also been developing similar blood sugar monitoring technology for several years.

In 2023, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on a device utilizing optical absorption spectroscopy to accurately monitor blood glucose levels.

As smartwatches already track essential health indicators like heart rate, blood oxygen, and blood pressure, it seems plausible that glucose monitoring could be the next feature to encourage consumer upgrades.

Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch 5, released today, is set to introduce an Insulin Resistance Trends feature as part of a new Health Guardian suite later this year. However, this feature relies on estimations from other data rather than direct measurements.
