Sequoia Capital Partner Shaun Maguire Faces Backlash for False Accusations

Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire has once again found himself in hot water after wrongly accusing a Palestinian student of being involved in the December 13 Brown University mass shooting and the subsequent murder of an MIT professor.

Maguire’s since-deleted posts on X suggested that the student was likely the perpetrator, citing Brown University’s actions to remove his online presence as evidence. However, authorities later identified the shooter as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national who was found dead in a New Hampshire storage facility. Brown University clarified that they removed the student’s digital footprint to prevent dangerous speculation.

Fast Company republished two of Maguire’s deleted posts, highlighting his history of controversial comments targeting Muslims and pro-Palestine activists. This incident follows previous inflammatory remarks, including calling New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani an “Islamist.” Subsequently, a group of founders and tech industry professionals signed an open letter urging Sequoia to take action against Maguire.

Questions now arise about whether Sequoia’s new leadership, Alfred Lin and Pat Grady, can effectively address Maguire’s behavior. Previous COO Sumaiya Balbale left the firm due to Sequoia’s inaction on Maguire’s anti-Muslim remarks. Former managing partner Roelof Botha defended Maguire’s actions, emphasizing the firm’s support for partners’ freedom of speech.

Despite Maguire’s investments in defense tech and AI startups, as well as his connections with Elon Musk’s companies, concerns persist about the impact of his controversial statements. While Botha acknowledged the benefits of diverse opinions, he also noted the trade-offs associated with Maguire’s outspokenness.

Lin and Grady have not publicly addressed Maguire’s conduct since assuming leadership, leaving the future response uncertain. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for Maguire’s dismissal, denouncing his accusations as dangerous and irresponsible.

For further comments on this matter, JS has reached out to Sequoia Capital for a response.
