Shelley Fabares, known for her role on the sitcom Coach from 1989 to 1997, also starred in three films with the King: Girl Happy, Spinout, and Clambake.

Her family released a statement expressing their love and admiration: “To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort.”

Described as a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, and a loyal friend, Fabares was remembered for her warmth, generosity, humor, and grace, which made a lasting impact on those who knew her.

Her ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for was remarkable.

Millions adored Shelley as an actress, with her work becoming part of the fabric of American television and film, the statement continued, also noting her Billboard chart-topping single, Johnny Angel.

Her greatest legacy, however, was personal: the love she freely gave, the friendships she treasured, and the family bonds she held dear.”

No cause of death was provided.

Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944, Fabares underwent a liver transplant in 2000. She was the niece of actress and singer Nanette Fabray, who appeared alongside Fred Astaire in the 1953 film The Band Wagon and later portrayed Fabares’ mother on Coach.

Fabares began her acting career at the age of three, with her first television appearance in 1954 on The Loretta Young Show. The following year, she worked with Frank Sinatra and Paul Newman in the Producers’ Showcase adaptation of Our Town.

In 1958, she featured in the TV serial Annette on The Mickey Mouse Club, starring Annette Funicello, and gained popularity among teens on The Donna Reed Show from 1958 to 1965.

Despite joking about her singing abilities, Fabares signed a recording contract and released two albums. Her No. 1 single Johnny Angel and other top 40 hits like Johnny Loves Me and Ronnie, Call Me marked her musical success.

After various TV guest roles in the ’60s, Fabares received a Golden Globe nomination for her role as the wife of Chicago Bears player Brian Piccolo (James Caan) in the 1971 ABC television film Brian’s Song.

Her career continued with regular roles on The Brian Keith Show and Forever Fernwood, and she portrayed the villainous Francine Webster in the sitcom One Day at a Time.

Fabares starred in the 1983 TV film Memorial Day with Mike Farrell, whom she later married. She was previously married to record and film producer Lou Adler from 1964, separating in 1966, and divorcing in 1980.

In 1989, she took on the role of Christine Armstrong on Coach, earning two Emmy nominations and achieving success after the show was rescheduled to air after Roseanne.

After Coach ended, she lent her voice to Martha Kent in Superman: The Animated Series, as well as in a 2003 episode of Justice League and the 2006 film Superman: Brainiac Attacks, which was her final role.

She is survived by her husband and stepchildren, Erin and Michael.
