How Peacock’s Changes Led to Success

The 20th season of “Married at First Sight” is captivating millions of viewers, as the Kinetic Content relationship reality series, which shifted to Peacock in its 19th season after 15 seasons on Lifetime, introduced several alterations this year.

The season’s finale and reunion were released on Peacock on Thursday, showing that only two couples decided to stay together on decision day. Mecca Amen and BelléJolie Force initially chose to continue their marriage but announced during the reunion that they parted ways shortly after. Meanwhile, Cameron Mitchell and Michelle Le remained together and happily married as of the reunion. Regrettably, the other couples broke up, and most are not on amicable terms.

Since its premiere on July 12, strategically timed following the end of Peacock’s hit show “Love Island USA,” “Married at First Sight” Season 20 has accumulated over 1.8 billion minutes viewed, according to Peacock. It ranks as the fourth highest-reaching original reality season on the platform, with streaming figures up by 153% compared to Season 19.

While Season 19 was also broadcast on Peacock, Season 20 is the first entirely produced for the platform. The changes implemented have proven successful, as the show has consistently ranked among the top three reality titles on streaming for five weeks in a row, according to Nielsen.

“When we first acquired it, I was super excited — this is one of the great formats in unscripted history,” states Noah Samton, SVP of current production for Bravo and Peacock unscripted. “Having the chance to enhance what is already a strong format, to elevate it further, is the most thrilling challenge for me.”

Below, we delve further into the modifications and enhancements with Samton — including the addition of a live audience at the reunion for the first time.

What were your initial steps when Peacock acquired “Married at First Sight”?

Typically, when acquiring a show like this, I would attempt to watch every episode. However, with this series, it was unfeasible. So, I watched about 40 episodes, which made it clear that there were opportunities to make it more engaging for a Peacock audience, while maintaining its unique charm.

Could you outline some of the creative changes?

For me, it boils down to two main areas. Firstly, we aimed to enhance the production quality, starting with the weddings. It’s a fantasy for viewers. You wonder, “Would I do it?” as you imagine yourself in a stunning wedding setting. Making the weddings more visually appealing was crucial to immersing viewers in this fantasy.

Secondly, we wanted a more aspirational cast. Authenticity is key, but it can coexist with aspirational qualities. Our goal was a cast genuinely interested in the process for the right reasons, while still being entertaining for viewers.

Did you observe the casting process?

I traveled to Seattle, where we spent five days with hundreds of potential cast members. The process involved experts finding suitable matches and producers selecting individuals who would engage television audiences. It was challenging but enjoyable.

This season featured a former reality TV star, Nick Uhlenhuth. Was that a deliberate choice to include a familiar face?

There were numerous discussions about this, as I wanted to draw attention to the show. With so many programs available, standing out is difficult. We sought someone viewers might recognize. Initially, we considered participants from “Love Island,” but none fit. Kinetic proposed Nick, and after reviewing his interview, he seemed a good fit. Unfortunately, a suitable match wasn’t found for him.

Would you consider bringing in another former reality star?

Possibly in the future. They must genuinely want to participate for authentic reasons. It’s not about gimmicks. Recently, I chatted with Lindsey Hubbard from “Summer House” about joining “Married at First Sight,” but she humorously suggested she might be ready in 20 years!

Planning for Season 41! This year saw changes to the expert panel, replacing Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Pastor Cal Roberson, and Dr. Pia Holec with Paul C. Brunson and Dr. Lisa Paz. What was the objective of this change?

Initially, we aimed for three experts who resonated more with a younger Peacock audience. However, Paul and Lisa stood out, leading us to simplify the team to just them. Their perspectives aligned well with our audience.

What other changes did you want to implement?

I insisted on featuring seven couples instead of five, initially hoping for eight. Watching 40 episodes, I noticed some mismatched couples were stretched through episodes unnecessarily. If a couple wasn’t working, they should exit. Hence, we wanted more couples to ensure content remained dynamic.

Before discussing the reunion, could you elaborate on Felipe Cruz telling Tori Dahl about his infidelity thoughts off-camera? How is this situation managed?

This is a common producer challenge. We constantly remind cast members to have conversations on camera. For shows like “Below Decks” and “Summer House,” continuous filming captures everything. Most shows, however, have downtime, leading to off-camera discussions. Producers must stay vigilant to ensure all essential dynamics are captured on camera.

Why was a live audience invited to the reunion for the first time?

I was initially hesitant about introducing a live audience. Kinetic and Ally Simpson advocated for it, believing it would inject a fresh dynamic. Despite my concerns about leaks and logistics, the energy and visual appeal made the reunion successful.

Seeing Adam Dehmlow’s new girlfriend claim the show was fake was surprising, allowing experts to defend its authenticity.

We often face skepticism about reality TV’s authenticity. While produced, everything shown is real. Demonstrating the cast’s genuine experiences helps counter doubts and assert the reality of the show.

Finally, there are online rumors questioning whether the couples truly married this season. What is your response?

The couples experience their journey as a married couple, from the wedding at the start to the potential divorce at the end if they choose to part ways.

This interview has been edited and condensed.
