Downing Street Condemns Gregg Wallace’s Response to Misconduct Allegations as “Inappropriate and Misogynistic”

A spokesperson from Downing Street has criticized “MasterChef” U.K. host Gregg Wallace for his response to misconduct allegations, labeling it as “inappropriate and misogynistic.” The government’s statement came after culture secretary Lisa Nandy discussed the matter with BBC executives, the network that airs the show. The controversy arose when Wallace announced he would step down as the presenter of “MasterChef” U.K. while facing allegations of historical misconduct by producer Banijay U.K. The accusations, which spanned from 2005 to 2022, included claims of sexually inappropriate comments made by Wallace. Despite denying the allegations as “entirely false,” Wallace’s response has sparked outrage and scrutiny.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, Wallace dismissed the claims as coming from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age.” He further defended himself by suggesting that female contestants on the show may have also made sexual remarks or innuendos over the years. However, these remarks have not mitigated the seriousness of the allegations against him.

MP Rupa Huq has called for a pause in airing “MasterChef” during the investigation, citing concerns that it could be triggering for the women who have come forward. While the next episode of “MasterChef: The Professionals” is scheduled to air, Huq suggested that a temporary halt might be appropriate until the investigation is concluded.

When questioned about the possibility of suspending the show entirely, the Downing Street spokesperson emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation being conducted by the BBC and the production company. The response from Wallace, the BBC, and Banijay U.K. to these allegations remains awaited.

Among Wallace’s accusers is broadcaster Kirsty Wark, who recounted experiencing “sexualized” jokes from Wallace during her time as a contestant on “Celebrity MasterChef.” The BBC has stated that they take such issues seriously and have established processes to address them.
