The tragic shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown has shocked the community, with the suspect still at large. According to the NYPD, the gunman was seen inside a Starbucks near the Hilton hotel where the shooting took place. A new photo of the suspect standing at the counter in the Starbucks has been released by authorities.
After fatally shooting Thompson multiple times, the suspect quickly fled the scene on foot. He was later spotted riding an e-Citi Bike on Sixth Avenue and disappearing into Central Park. Thompson was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence, as they suspect the gunman had targeted Thompson, who was scheduled to speak at an investors’ conference for UnitedHealth Group later that day. Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that he had received threats related to his position as the CEO of the largest private insurer in America.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the shooting as a premeditated and targeted attack. Despite ongoing efforts to locate the suspect, no arrests have been made yet. NYPD Crime Stoppers has offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
