The tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the lives of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother this summer in New Jersey has left a lasting impact on the community. Recently, authorities released audio tapes from the 911 calls made by witnesses in the frantic moments after the accident, shedding light on the chaos and confusion that ensued.

The incident occurred on a rural road in Oldmans Township when Sean Higgins, a suspected drunk driver, allegedly struck the Gaudreau brothers as they were cycling. The 911 calls paint a picture of darkness and difficulty in locating the victims, with callers struggling to provide details due to poor visibility.

Upon police arrival, body camera footage shows state troopers questioning Higgins, who appears calm and claims he had been returning from a trip to Taco Bell. However, he admits to consuming alcohol prior to the crash, stating that he had been drinking beers but had not had one in about two hours.

Higgins’s demeanor changes as he attempts field sobriety tests and expresses concern for the victims. He is later arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto, as well as reckless driving and other related offenses. The Gaudreau brothers, Johnny and Matthew, tragically lost their lives at the scene, prompting their sister Katie to postpone her wedding.

Despite efforts to prevent the release of records, the court order was lifted, allowing for transparency in the investigation. Higgins, a major in the New Jersey Army National Guard, faces the possibility of up to 10 years in prison for his actions. It was also revealed that he worked for a substance abuse treatment network in Pennsylvania, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
