Naronn Cain (Chicago Police Department)

Chicago Man Sentenced to Federal Prison for Carjacking Incident

CHICAGO — Naronn Cain, a 27-year-old Chicago man, has been sentenced to 10 years and 5 months in federal prison for his involvement in a carjacking incident. The decision to carjack a couple at gunpoint stemmed from Cain’s impatience with the driver of his car, who he believed was driving too slowly and preventing him from getting home.

On August 25, 2022, Cain and a friend were passengers in a vehicle when Cain’s frustration led to the carjacking of two individuals inside a Kia Optima in the 2600 block of West Division. Armed with a rifle, Cain threatened the driver while his accomplice pointed a handgun at a woman in the passenger seat.

Following the carjacking, Illinois State Police attempted to intercept the stolen vehicle on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Cain drove recklessly at speeds exceeding 120 mph before crashing at 87th and State. At the police station, Cain justified his actions by claiming that the mother of his children threatened to keep his kids away if he did not arrive on time.

Despite his defense attorney highlighting Cain’s engagement and positive upbringing, prosecutors recommended and ultimately secured a 125-month sentence for the carjacking and firearm-related charges. Cain’s accomplice, Allen Clay, is also facing federal charges related to the incident.

In a statement, Cain’s attorney mentioned the impact of spending nearly three years in custody, suggesting that it has set him on a different path towards rehabilitation. The defense attorney advocated for a 96-month sentence based on Cain’s personal circumstances and potential for reform.

As the legal proceedings continue for Allen Clay, the repercussions of the carjacking incident serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of impulsive and criminal behavior.
