Joao Lucas Reis da Silva, a 24-year-old professional tennis player, made headlines on Saturday, December 7, when he posted a couple selfie on Instagram to celebrate his partner’s birthday. In the post, he expressed his love for his partner and shared a carousel of photos of them posing by the water in Rio de Janeiro. Little did he know that this simple gesture would make him the first out gay active professional male tennis player.

In his first international interview with The Athletic, Reis da Silva shared that he didn’t think much about the post and just wanted to share a picture with his partner. Earlier that day, he had won a tournament for the first time in four years, securing a spot in the qualifying round at the Rio Open. Despite the newfound attention on his personal life, Reis da Silva remained focused on his game and expressed gratitude for the support he received from his partner and team.

While the women’s tennis tour has seen several out gay players, men’s tennis has lagged behind in terms of LGBTQ+ representation. Reis da Silva revealed that he came out to his family and friends five years ago, which was a turning point in his life. Finding love with Gui Sampaio Ricardo, a Brazilian actor and model, further solidified his decision to live authentically.

The response to Reis da Silva’s post was overwhelmingly positive, with messages of support pouring in from both within and outside the tennis world. He acknowledged that there may be some negative reactions, but he was heartened by the outpouring of love and respect he received.

Reflecting on his journey, Reis da Silva emphasized the importance of having LGBTQ+ role models in sports. He believed that seeing someone like him compete at a high level would have made a difference in his self-acceptance and hopes to inspire others to embrace their true selves.

As he looks ahead to 2025, Reis da Silva plans to continue competing in tournaments around the world, with a goal of playing in the qualifying tournament for Roland Garros. He remains optimistic about the future of LGBTQ+ representation in tennis and hopes to be a trailblazer for future generations.

Overall, Reis da Silva’s story is a testament to the power of love, authenticity, and resilience in the face of adversity. As he continues to make strides in his career, he remains committed to being true to himself and paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse tennis community.
