Netflix Cancels “Girls5Eva” After Three Seasons

After three successful seasons, the popular musical comedy “Girls5Eva” has been unexpectedly canceled for the second time, this time by Netflix.

The show initially aired its first two seasons on Peacock from 2021 to 2022. However, when Peacock decided not to continue with the series, Netflix stepped in to renew it for a third season, which premiered in March 2024.

Created by Meredith Scardino and produced by Tina Fey, “Girls5Eva” follows the story of a ’90s girls group reuniting to revive their music careers after receiving an unexpected second chance. The series stars Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry and has garnered critical acclaim for its witty humor and catchy original songs.

Despite high expectations for the show on Netflix, it failed to attract a substantial audience. Variety TV Editor Michael Schneider suggested that the show’s title may have been a contributing factor, as many viewers on Netflix tend to quickly scroll past titles without fully grasping the context of a show.

Busy Philipps confirmed the cancellation news on her “Doing Her Best” podcast, expressing disappointment over the decision. She mentioned that Netflix has not provided any information on the show’s future or the specifics of its cancellation.

Despite the setback, Philipps remains optimistic about the show’s potential. She hinted at the possibility of turning “Girls5Eva” into a live stage musical, potentially even aiming for a Broadway adaptation in the future.

In reflecting on the show’s title, Philipps speculated that it might have alienated certain demographics, particularly straight male viewers. She raised the question of whether women-centric titles impact the success of a show and suggested that further research could shed light on this phenomenon.
