A suspect accused of fatally striking a police officer with a vehicle has been detained in custody following his appearance in the Nelson District Court. He has been granted interim name suppression for seven days and has been remanded without entering a plea. Bail was not sought during the hearing.

The tragic incident occurred in Buxton Square on New Year’s Day, resulting in the death of Senior Sergeant Lyn Fleming and injuries to Senior Sergeant Adam Ramsey, as well as two members of the public. One woman sustained a broken arm, while a man who came to aid the police suffered a shoulder injury. Another police officer was treated for a concussion and subsequently discharged from the hospital.

During the court session, Judge Richard Russell issued an order prohibiting all forms of media, including social media, from sharing a video of the event. The 32-year-old suspect faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, assault with a vehicle, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 14 at the High Court in Nelson.
