A recent incident in Southern California has brought attention to the dangerous practice of launching lantern balloons with lit candles into the sky, especially in high wildfire risk zones. A TikToker, who preferred to remain anonymous, witnessed a group of individuals launching “sky lanterns” near a nature preserve and residential area, despite the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.

The TikToker had gone to a beach near Santa Barbara to relax after assisting fire victims in Los Angeles when she stumbled upon the alarming scene. The group of partiers was launching the lanterns dangerously close to a campground and nature preserve, disregarding the potential fire hazard they were creating.

Sky lanterns, which can reach altitudes of 1,500 feet, have a history of causing fires when they crash-land on forests or rooftops. As a result, they are illegal in many states, including California. Despite this, the group insisted that they had a “permit” for the lanterns and claimed that it was safe to launch them because it was not windy.

The TikToker, along with another concerned bystander, confronted the group and tried to explain the seriousness of the situation. She mentioned that she had been working with wildfire victims in Los Angeles and was deeply affected by the devastation she had witnessed. The group, however, continued to launch the lanterns until the TikToker decided to call 911.

Local authorities eventually intervened and put a stop to the lantern-launching, but the experience left the TikToker shaken. She expressed her concerns about the lack of awareness and responsibility shown by the partygoers and emphasized the importance of being cautious, especially in high-risk fire zones.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by seemingly harmless activities, particularly during times of heightened fire risk. It is essential for individuals to be mindful of their actions and prioritize safety to prevent wildfires and protect lives and property.
