Social Network Bluesky Embraces Video with New User Profile Tab

Social network Bluesky is making a big push into video content with its latest update. Following the introduction of a TikTok-like custom video feed last week in response to the U.S. ban on the popular app, Bluesky has now announced a new video tab for user profiles.

The new video tab will allow Bluesky users to showcase the videos they have uploaded to the platform. This could include original content as well as videos sourced from other social networks, such as TikTok. In addition to enhancing the platform’s video capabilities, this move could potentially open up a new revenue stream for Bluesky. The company may explore the option of offering premium video features, such as longer or higher-quality videos, as part of a subscription plan.

While the introduction of the video tab has generated excitement among some users and developers, not everyone is on board with Bluesky’s video-centric approach. Some users have expressed concerns about the platform becoming too similar to TikTok and are questioning whether they will have the option to disable the video tab on their profiles. Others are calling for Bluesky to prioritize other features, such as an Edit button.

Despite the mixed reactions, there is a clear demand for video-focused Bluesky applications. Developers are already working on creating “Bluesky TikTok” apps, with projects like Skeets, Flashes, Reelo, and Skylight in the works. Even prominent investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban has expressed interest in supporting a video app built on the AT Protocol, which powers Bluesky.

The new user profile video tab was introduced as part of the Bluesky 1.97 update. This update also includes additional features such as a menu for blocking users and deleting conversations after reporting a direct message (DM), as well as improvements in translation capabilities.
