Former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele engaged with President Donald Trump over the FBI firings that reportedly targeted top officials and federal prosecutors connected to the January 6th Capitol attack. Trump claimed he wasn’t involved in the firings, but Steele challenged this assertion on MSNBC’s “The Weekend.”

Steele expressed skepticism about the President’s claim, stating that the FBI wouldn’t carry out such significant dismissals without the White House’s knowledge. The removals included senior FBI executives, field office heads, and prosecutors, as reported by NBC News.

Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll sent a memo to the bureau, explaining that the Justice Department requested a review of employees working on Capitol attack cases. The request covered thousands of employees involved in these investigations.

During the discussion on MSNBC, reporter Ryan J. Reilly highlighted the seriousness of the cases related to the Capitol riot, involving violent offenders who assaulted law enforcement officers. Alicia Menendez, co-host of “The Weekend,” referenced a statement from the FBI Agents Association warning that the dismissals could weaken the Bureau’s ability to address national security and criminal threats.

Reilly emphasized the widespread impact of the Capitol riot on the FBI, indicating that numerous employees were involved in various aspects of the investigation. The panel’s analysis raised concerns about the potential repercussions of the firings on the Bureau’s effectiveness.
