Stained glass art has a rich history dating back to ancient civilizations, but it is most commonly associated with its use in Western Christian churches. Artist Timo Fahler draws inspiration from this tradition, combining it with Mesoamerican imagery, national symbols, and motifs from European churches to create a unique multimedia practice.

Fahler sees stained glass as a storytelling medium that allows him to express his beliefs, experiences, and observations about the world. His work reflects the current era of rapid technological advancement and societal change, capturing the essence of the time we live in.

Having initially explored lampworking glass during his studies in ceramics, Fahler has integrated this medium into his practice, particularly in his “rebar drawings.” By incorporating the unpredictability of light into his work, he creates sculptures that play with shadows and colors, often framed by heavy-duty metals like rusted steel and iron fences.

In his recent pieces, Fahler explores themes of freedom and knowledge by incorporating barriers that symbolize the restrictions imposed on individuals. One of his works, inspired by Emma Lazarus’s poem “New Colossus,” depicts the Statue of Liberty’s arm behind a gate, highlighting the challenges faced by immigrants seeking refuge and inclusivity.

Through his sculptures, Fahler combines mythical creatures, landscapes, and historical references with realistic portraits and national emblems. His artwork often features symbols like the Mexican flag emblem, representing the resilience and spirit of the Mexican people, but with a twist – the icons are barricaded, symbolizing the limitations imposed on freedom.

Currently based in Amsterdam, Fahler is preparing for a solo exhibition with Sebastian Gladstone, where he plans to delve into themes of sovereignty, expatriation, and the evolving global society. His work reflects the complexities of the modern world and aims to capture the essence of a rapidly changing reality.
