City Taxpayers Paid $206 Million to Settle NYPD Police Misconduct Lawsuits in 2024

According to a recent report, city taxpayers in New York City had to pay a staggering amount of nearly $206 million to settle NYPD police misconduct lawsuits in the year 2024. This marked the highest payout in any year since 2018, totaling over $750 million in settlements since then. The data also suggests that the actual amount could be significantly higher due to some cases being resolved by the comptroller’s office before lawsuits were even filed.

The Legal Aid Society, in their analysis of the situation, criticized the city for prioritizing financial settlements over taking concrete actions to address the culture of impunity within the NYPD. Amanda Jack, the society’s policy director for criminal reform, expressed concerns over the persistent misconduct and the lack of accountability within the police department.

The Legal Aid Society says the city paid out nearly $206 million last year to settle police misconduct lawsuits.

The report also highlighted the efforts of Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, and the NYPD to amend the state’s evidence-sharing requirements, known as discovery. The proposed changes aim to limit the time for defense lawyers to request case dismissals due to discovery violations, with the goal of reducing the number of defendants released on technicalities. However, the Legal Aid Society warned that such measures could lead to an increase in wrongful convictions.

In response to the report, the NYPD refuted the claims, stating that the statistics provided by the Legal Aid Society were misleading. They clarified that nearly half of the settled cases involved prosecutorial misconduct and wrongful convictions, rather than solely police actions. Additionally, a significant portion of the cases date back at least 20 years, indicating a long-standing issue within the criminal justice system.

The NYPD says the Legal Aid stats are misleading — nearly half the cases are 20 years old and the claims included prosecutorial misconduct and wrongful convictions.

Overall, the debate surrounding police misconduct lawsuits and legal settlements continues to raise concerns about accountability, transparency, and justice within the law enforcement system. The ongoing efforts to reform the criminal justice system and address systemic issues remain crucial in ensuring fair treatment for all individuals involved.
