The National Republican Congressional Committee recently came under fire for directly attacking Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat’s immigration status. In a controversial post on X, the NRCC criticized Democrats for selecting “an illegal immigrant” to respond to President Trump’s address, claiming that this decision showcased a disconnect from the American people.

The attack on Espaillat, the first Dominican American member of Congress and a former undocumented immigrant, was swiftly condemned by top Democrats as racist. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries denounced the NRCC’s post as “disgusting,” while newly elected Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin accused the GOP of openly displaying racism.

Senator Ruben Gallego also weighed in, calling for the firing of the intern responsible for the racist tweet from the NRCC. Espaillat, who delivered the Spanish-language response to President Trump’s joint address to Congress, has been a U.S. citizen for decades and chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. He proudly identifies as a “former undocumented immigrant turned progressive Congressman” and has been a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration policies.

Despite the backlash, the NRCC stood by its language, dismissing criticism from New York Governor Kathy Hochul and emphasizing the importance of border security and crime prevention. Espaillat’s office declined to comment on the controversy.

Interestingly, some Democrats have also used their opponents’ citizenship status in recent attacks. Representative Nydia Velázquez made headlines by telling Elon Musk, a U.S. citizen originally from South Africa, to “go back to South Africa” during a rally outside HUD. Velázquez misinterpreted Musk’s comments on immigration and faced criticism from Republicans for her remarks.

Musk, known for his stance on immigration and global cultures, has advocated for a selective immigration policy in the U.S. and expressed concerns about the homogenization of distinct cultures. Velázquez’s comments sparked a backlash, with the White House’s rapid response team labeling them as “completely unhinged.”

In a political climate where immigration and citizenship status are hot-button issues, the exchange between the NRCC, Democrats, and Elon Musk highlights the divisive rhetoric surrounding these topics. As the debate continues, it remains essential to engage in constructive dialogue and respectful discourse on immigration policies and national identity.
