Disney and DirecTV in Standoff Over Distribution Deal
As the deadline for a renewed distribution deal between Disney and DirecTV approaches, viewers may be at risk of losing access to popular networks such as ESPN and ABC. The current agreement is set to expire on Sunday, Sept. 1, and negotiations between the two companies seem to be at a standstill.
With the NFL season about to kick off and ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” returning on Sept. 9, the timing of the potential blackout couldn’t be worse for sports fans. Justin Connolly, president of Disney Platform Distribution, expressed frustration with DirecTV’s lack of engagement in the deal talks, stating, “We continue to put a number of tangible options on the table, and DirecTV has not engaged in earnest at this point.”
DirecTV is reportedly seeking greater flexibility in how it packages Disney’s networks, while Disney has offered various options, including a sports-centric package that includes ESPN and ABC. Connolly mentioned that Disney has been willing to be flexible and accommodating in the negotiations, drawing on the template of their recent deal with Charter Communications in September 2023.
The renewal talks between Disney and DirecTV are crucial for both companies, as the outcome will determine the future availability of Disney-owned channels on the satellite TV provider’s platform. Disney’s most recent carriage renewal with Charter resulted in select Spectrum TV customers gaining access to Disney+ and ESPN+ at no additional charge, showcasing the potential benefits of a successful deal.
Despite the looming deadline, both Disney and DirecTV remain hopeful that a resolution can be reached before Sunday. Connolly emphasized the importance of finding a solution that benefits both parties and ensures that consumers are not left without access to Disney’s content on DirecTV.
As the negotiations continue, the future of Disney’s networks on DirecTV hangs in the balance. Both companies are under pressure to reach a compromise that satisfies their respective needs and aligns with consumer preferences in an evolving TV landscape.
