Protests over the Gaza conflict sparked heated debates and division at Columbia University last year. Among the students involved, Mahmoud Khalil, 30, stood out as a negotiator representing activists in discussions with school officials to seek peace on campus. Despite his efforts to convey a measured and responsible message, some, including the Trump administration, labeled him as antisemitic.

Mr. Khalil continued his activism, participating in demonstrations, including one in January where masked individuals disrupted a class on Israel’s history at Columbia. Videos of Mr. Khalil at a related sit-in circulated on social media, leading to calls for his deportation. These events culminated in his arrest by federal immigration officials over the weekend, as part of President Trump’s crackdown on what he deemed antisemitic campus activities.

The news of Mr. Khalil’s detention prompted around 3,000 protestors to flood the streets of Lower Manhattan in support of his release. Supporters emphasized his role in advocating for immigrants’ rights and the Palestinian cause. Described as kind and gentle by friends, Mr. Khalil was known for his love of dance, Arab poetry, and music, as well as his generosity in hosting dinners for friends.

While the Columbia community expressed shock over his arrest, the Columbia Jewish Alumni Association portrayed Mr. Khalil as a “ringleader of chaos” for his involvement in building takeovers. Born and raised in Syria to Palestinian grandparents displaced from Israel, Mr. Khalil holds a master’s degree from Columbia and is married to an American citizen expecting their first child.

Following his arrest, a petition demanding Mr. Khalil’s release garnered over 1.7 million signatures. Faculty members, Jewish community leaders, and immigrant rights advocates condemned his detention as unconstitutional retaliation for his political activism. The arrest was denounced as a violation of free speech and an attack on a permanent resident.

As the case unfolds in court, the Columbia community rallies behind Mr. Khalil, highlighting the importance of protecting political speech and the rights of immigrants. The outcome of his legal battle will have significant implications for the boundaries of activism and free expression on college campuses.
