We Earthlings: Know AI’s Water Impact

Generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, has become increasingly popular for answering questions and providing information online. However, a surprising fact revealed in a 2023 University of California report is that using AI like ChatGPT consumes a significant amount of water. In fact, it was estimated that ChatGPT uses about 16 ounces of water to answer just 50 questions.

This water consumption may not be something that most people consider when using AI, but it is an important issue to address. One way to reduce the environmental impact of AI and other online services is to ask providers to reuse water instead of constantly ingesting water from the environment to cool their data centers. Additionally, the heat generated by these data centers could be used to produce electricity, further reducing the overall impact of digital technology.

It’s important to remember that every time you ask a question to an AI, it’s essentially taking a “drink” of water to process and provide an answer. By raising awareness about the water consumption of AI and other online services, we can work towards more sustainable practices in the digital world.

One simple way to spread awareness about this issue is by printing and sharing We Earthling posters that highlight stories about nature and the impact individuals can make. By educating others about the environmental implications of using AI and other digital technologies, we can all work together to reduce our water consumption and minimize our carbon footprint.

Overall, it’s crucial to consider the water usage of AI and other online services and take steps to mitigate their environmental impact. By advocating for water reuse, energy efficiency, and sustainable practices in the digital realm, we can help create a more environmentally friendly future for all.
