A tragic incident unfolded at a McDonald’s in Queens back in February, resulting in the stabbing death of 14-year-old Julian Corniell. The suspect, a 16-year-old boy who remains unnamed due to his minor status, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to the fatal brawl that took place on Valentine’s Day.
The altercation occurred in broad daylight when two groups of teens from different high schools clashed at the Sunnyside fast food establishment. During the fight, the older teen allegedly stabbed Corniell in the left side of his torso with a knife, leading to the young boy fleeing the scene in a mortally wounded state.
Corniell managed to cross Queens Boulevard before collapsing on the street. He was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family devastated by the senseless loss. His mother, Julia Verona, expressed deep sadness over the tragic event, emphasizing that her son did not deserve to die in such a violent manner.
The arrested 16-year-old suspect is the second person taken into custody in connection to Corniell’s death. Another 14-year-old boy was apprehended shortly after the incident and charged with gang assault. The circumstances surrounding the brawl remain unclear to the victim’s family, as they live in Jamaica, far from Sunnyside where the tragedy unfolded.
Corniell was described as a brilliant and fun-loving boy who enjoyed playing video games and soccer. His mother recalled his fear of being bullied and reluctance to go out alone due to past experiences. The loss of her only son has left the family shattered, with Verona struggling to come to terms with the devastating news.
Now facing charges of murder, manslaughter, and gang assault, the 16-year-old suspect could potentially face a lengthy prison sentence of 25 years to life. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed the heartbreaking nature of the case, highlighting the tragedy of teenagers being involved as both perpetrators and victims. The pursuit of justice for Corniell’s untimely death remains a top priority for the prosecution, aiming to hold the responsible party accountable for their actions.
