After a decade since its debut, “Wolf Hall” has returned to PBS Masterpiece with a new season titled “The Mirror and the Light.” This season is adapted from the final book in Hilary Mantel’s “Wolf Hall” series and continues to explore the intricate world of 16th-century England.

The new season picks up after the downfall of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII’s marriage to his third wife, Jane Seymour. As political unrest brews and the king’s temper grows volatile, Thomas Cromwell, played by the talented Mark Rylance, finds himself navigating through the complexities of court life. Cromwell, who has risen to the position of Lord Privy Seal, is constantly reminded of his humble origins as the son of a blacksmith.

In the second episode titled “Obedience,” Cromwell grapples with guilt and the consequences of his actions as he seeks absolution from Cardinal Wolsey’s illegitimate daughter, Dorothea. The series delves into Cromwell’s internal struggles and the weight of his loyalty to the king, portrayed brilliantly by Damian Lewis.

While the new season may lack the thrilling energy of its predecessor, it offers a deeper and more introspective look into Cromwell’s character. The performances of Rylance and Lewis are outstanding, showcasing the complex dynamics between Cromwell and King Henry VIII.

Director Peter Kosminsky, who helmed all six episodes of the series, maintains the same level of authenticity and attention to detail that made the original season a success. The seamless blend of setting, tone, and narrative makes it hard to believe that ten years have passed since the first season aired.

“Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light” is a captivating exploration of power, loyalty, and the consequences of manipulation in the Tudor court. As Cromwell faces the challenges of maintaining the king’s favor while staying true to his own beliefs, viewers are taken on a mesmerizing journey through a tumultuous period in history.

The series premieres on March 23 on PBS Masterpiece, with new episodes airing weekly on Sundays. Join Cromwell as he navigates the treacherous waters of court politics and strives to secure his place in a world where loyalty is fleeting and power is a double-edged sword.
