Hockey fans were left in dismay after the NHL announced their reported policy of revealing team rosters for the upcoming Olympics in June and December. TSN analyst Pierre LeBrun took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the latest update on the matter.

According to LeBrun’s post, the current plan is for each country to disclose six players in June, with the remainder of the rosters to be unveiled by the end of December. This early announcement timeline has sparked concerns among fans, especially with the 2026 Winter Olympics set to take place from Feb. 6-22. Fans fear that the premature roster announcements could lead to player omissions and potential injuries before the games even begin.

The discontent among fans was palpable, with many drawing parallels to a similar situation that arose during the recently concluded 4 Nations Face-Off. One user pointed out that the NHL seemed not to have learned from past mistakes, while others questioned the logic behind naming only six players so far in advance.

“Why do they have to name players early? There aren’t going to be any surprises with these announcements. Most countries have 6 obvious choices and the ones that don’t will be naming players no one has heard of,” expressed a fan on X.

Another user echoed the sentiment, stating, “What is the point of this, honestly? Just name the team when you leave in early February.”

The decision to name players early has left fans perplexed, with many expressing their frustration and disappointment online. Some fans criticized the move, arguing that it eliminates the element of surprise and suspense that comes with team selections.

In a separate development, NHL players are poised to make a comeback to the Olympics after a decade-long absence. Following the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off, more best-on-best tournaments are on the horizon, including the 2026 and 2030 Olympics and the 2028 World Cup of Hockey.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman shed light on the rationale behind the 4 Nations Face-Off, emphasizing the need to kickstart international competitions in a gradual manner. The last time NHL players participated in a major international tournament was during the World Cup of Hockey in 2016.

As fans eagerly await the upcoming Olympics and other prestigious hockey events, the debate over early roster announcements continues to divide opinions. Only time will tell how these decisions will impact the game and the players involved.
