Donald Trump’s Clash with Columbia University: A 25-Year Drama

In a dramatic clash between a billionaire president and a prestigious Ivy League university, Donald Trump and Columbia University found themselves at odds over a lucrative real estate deal 25 years ago. The feud, which began over a potential expansion of Columbia’s campus onto Trump’s property, has evolved into a battle involving free speech, academic freedom, and the federal government’s role in funding higher education.

The saga started when Columbia was seeking to expand its footprint in New York City to accommodate the growing needs of its research initiatives. Trump, then a brash real estate developer, offered a prime location on the Upper West Side known as Riverside South. The property, once a former freight yard, was rebranded as Trump Place and became the subject of negotiations between the university and the Trump Organization.

However, the discussions quickly soured as Trump demanded exorbitant sums, including a staggering $400 million for the property. Despite attempts to reach a compromise, Trump’s ever-changing demands and grandiose expectations led to a breakdown in negotiations. The university ultimately decided to pursue other options for expansion, leading to a rift between Trump and Columbia.

In the years that followed, Trump’s resentment towards Columbia simmered, culminating in public outbursts where he labeled the university president as “a dummy” and “a total moron.” Despite the failed deal, Trump remained fixated on what could have been, lamenting the missed opportunity for Columbia to have a “beautiful campus” behind Lincoln Center.

As Columbia moved forward with plans to expand into Harlem and develop a new campus in Manhattanville, Trump’s West Side property was eventually sold for a substantial sum. Yet, Trump’s bitterness towards Columbia persisted, underscoring his penchant for holding grudges as outlined in his book “How To Get Rich.”

The clash between Trump and Columbia serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics at play when powerful personalities and prestigious institutions collide. While the feud may have ended, the legacy of the confrontation continues to shape the relationship between the two entities.
